A new Shopify store does not need a long list of apps. Every app should solve a specific business requirement. Shopify also notes that apps and third-party scripts can affect storefront web performance, so installing tools “just in case” is not a good default.
Start with the problem, not an app list
Write down what the store cannot currently do. If Shopify or your theme already provides the feature, you may not need an app at all.
1. Customer communication
If customers need real-time help, evaluate a chat or messaging solution. Check whether it loads on every page, whether your team can actually respond and whether the feature improves support rather than simply adding another floating widget.
2. Search and product discovery
Stores with a growing catalog may benefit from stronger search, filters and merchandising tools. Small catalogs should first make sure collections and navigation are structured clearly.
3. Email capture and forms
A simple newsletter or lead form can be useful, but avoid aggressive popups before you understand how visitors use the store.
4. Reviews
Product reviews can add useful social proof when they are genuine. Choose a review solution based on the features you need, import/export options and the way it affects page performance.
5. Translation or localization
If you actively sell to customers in multiple languages or markets, localization tools can become important. Do not add them before there is a real market requirement.
6. Analytics and marketing
Install only the tracking integrations you actually use. Multiple overlapping pixels and scripts can create both data-quality and performance problems.
How to evaluate a free app
- Does it solve a current problem?
- What is included in the free tier?
- What happens when you exceed the free limit?
- Does it inject storefront scripts?
- Can your data be exported?
- Is support/documentation maintained?
- Can the feature be handled natively by Shopify or the theme?
Do a quarterly app cleanup
Review installed apps and remove tools the business no longer uses. Shopify warns that uninstalling an app does not always remove every piece of theme code, so inspect the theme if performance or leftover elements remain.
The best “free app stack” is usually a small one
For a new store, keep the storefront lean. Add functionality when customer behavior or operations create a clear reason for it. That keeps costs and technical complexity easier to control.
