Liquid is the templating language Shopify themes use to connect storefront markup with store data. If HTML describes the structure of a page, Liquid is one of the tools that lets that structure react to products, collections, settings and other Shopify data.
What can Liquid do?
Liquid can output values, apply filters and use logic to decide what should render. In a Shopify theme, it is commonly used with HTML, CSS, JSON templates and JavaScript.
What is a custom section?
A section is a reusable Liquid file. Shopify's current theme architecture allows sections to define settings and blocks that merchants can edit in the Theme Editor. JSON templates store which sections appear on a page and in what order.
Why this matters for store owners
A well-built custom section can create a unique storefront layout while still letting the merchant change normal content without touching code. That is usually better than hard-coding every heading, image and label.
Examples of Custom Liquid work
- Custom product information layouts
- Trust or feature sections
- Collection-based content
- Metafield-driven product details
- Responsive promotional sections
- Conditional content based on product data
Liquid is not a replacement for everything
Some requirements need JavaScript, an app, a backend integration or Shopify Functions rather than theme Liquid. The correct tool depends on where the functionality belongs.
Should beginners edit theme code directly?
Small experiments are useful for learning, but always work on a duplicate/unpublished theme and understand how to revert changes. A syntax error or poorly scoped CSS/JavaScript can affect other parts of the storefront.
Theme Editor vs Custom Liquid vs full section
Use built-in Theme Editor settings first. Use a Custom Liquid block for focused markup when appropriate. Build a proper reusable section when the feature needs merchant settings, blocks or repeatable use across templates.
