Mobile performance problems often come from several small issues rather than one obvious cause. Shopify identifies apps, third-party services, analytics, theme code and media as common factors that can affect storefront performance.
Check the actual mobile experience first
Open the store on a real phone and use it like a customer. Navigate collections, open a product, change variants, add to cart and reach checkout. Note where the experience feels delayed or unstable.
Look at the largest visual elements
Hero images, product galleries and video are common candidates. Shopify automatically serves images through its CDN, but you should still avoid unnecessary media and make sure the theme requests sensible image sizes.
Audit app widgets
Review popups, chat, reviews, upsells, tracking and other app features. If multiple tools inject scripts on every page, the mobile experience can become heavier.
Check theme JavaScript
Custom code can create duplicated event listeners, large libraries or scripts that run on pages where they are not needed. Fixing these issues requires looking at the theme rather than adding another optimization layer.
Watch for layout shifts
Elements jumping while a page loads make a store feel slow and unreliable. Reserve space for images and dynamic content and check sticky bars or popups that appear after load.
Use Core Web Vitals as signals
Shopify's current web performance guidance focuses on Largest Contentful Paint for loading, Cumulative Layout Shift for visual stability and Interaction to Next Paint for responsiveness. Use these metrics to identify categories of problems, then investigate the actual page.
Do not optimize only for a score
A store still needs useful product media, analytics and customer features. The goal is a better customer experience, not removing everything to produce an artificial score.
