How to Set Up Cash on Delivery on Shopify in Pakistan

Cash on delivery can be enabled in Shopify without a separate payment gateway because Shopify treats COD as a manual payment method.

How to activate COD

1. Open Shopify Admin and go to Settings → Payments.
2. Find the manual payment methods area.
3. Select Cash on Delivery (COD), if shown, or configure the appropriate manual method.
4. Add clear additional details and payment instructions.
5. Activate the method and save your changes.

Shopify's current documentation explains that the payment instructions appear to the customer after the order is completed.

What happens to a COD order?

A manual-payment order is recorded as unpaid until you receive payment. After the courier/customer payment is confirmed, the order can be marked paid in Shopify. Your operational workflow should make it clear who is responsible for updating payment and fulfillment status.

Does Shopify charge transaction fees on COD?

Shopify states that third-party transaction fees aren't charged for manual payment methods such as cash on delivery and bank transfer. Courier and operational charges are separate business costs.

Write better COD instructions

Tell customers what happens next: whether you confirm orders by phone/WhatsApp, expected delivery time, whether exact cash is preferred, and where they can contact you. Keep the instructions short enough to read on mobile.

Test COD before launching

• Place a COD order yourself.
• Check the order confirmation screen.
• Check the email/SMS flow you use.
• Verify shipping charges.
• Confirm the order appears with the expected payment status.
• Test how your team marks payment after delivery.

COD does not solve every conversion problem

If customers are abandoning before checkout, inspect the product page, mobile layout, shipping clarity and trust signals as well. Payment method is only one part of the buying journey.
