How to Speed Up a Shopify Store Without Adding More Apps

How to speed up a Shopify store without adding more apps

Installing another speed app is not always the first answer. Shopify says storefront performance can be affected by apps, third-party libraries, analytics, theme code and the quantity and size of images and videos.

Start with measurement, not guesses

Review Shopify's web performance reporting and use tools such as PageSpeed Insights to identify whether the main issue is loading, layout stability or interaction responsiveness. Core Web Vitals currently focus on LCP, CLS and INP.

1. Audit apps and third-party scripts

Every storefront feature has a cost. Remove apps that no longer solve a business need and check whether old app code or scripts remain in the theme after uninstalling.

2. Review the theme before adding tools

Look for duplicate libraries, oversized sections, unnecessary sliders, scripts loaded on every page and custom code that runs where it is not needed. Fixing the source is often cleaner than layering another app over it.

3. Handle images correctly

Shopify's CDN automatically transforms and serves images in suitable formats for supported browsers, but the number, dimensions and use of images still matter. Avoid loading huge visual assets where a smaller rendered size is enough and use the correct aspect ratio to prevent layout problems.

4. Be careful with video and carousels

Autoplay video, multiple carousels and social feeds can add network and script work. Keep features that genuinely help the customer and remove decorative elements that cost performance without improving the buying decision.

5. Check mobile separately

A store can feel acceptable on a fast desktop connection and still feel heavy on mobile. Test navigation, product media, variant controls, sticky bars and app widgets on a real phone.

6. Protect layout stability

Reserve space for media and dynamic elements where possible. Unexpected layout shifts make the storefront feel unstable even when the total loading time is not terrible.

7. Re-test after each meaningful change

Performance work should be measured. Compare before/after results and make sure the optimization did not break product functionality or the customer experience.
